Bau Land is a design studio on a mission to improve people’s relationship with the environment and each other. We research and design solutions to environmental and social issues and create solutions across scales, from products and buildings to public spaces and urban plans.
group-made
Collaboration is intrinsic to Bau Land’s work model. While our studio is based in NYC, our team is distributed. This makes it easy to match our clients with a perfect team and allows us to adapt. We’re sensitive to a variety of collaborators perspectives, and excel at collectively moving ideas forward. We like to collaborate with many types of do-er’s. Clients we’ve worked with in the past include Fortune 500 companies, city governments, real estate developers, and NGOs.
idea-powered
Our designs are driven by big ideas and informed by research. We aim to address large issues like climate change, happiness, and technology by asking big questions.
Bau Land is an impact-driven design firm. Because each project is unique, we conduct in-depth research and solicit stakeholder input to screen design alternatives. Our design process is iterative until we arrive at an optimal solution for stakeholders and the environment. This process lends itself to producing innovative designs that are grounded in pragmatism.
genre-bending
Bau Land is an interdisciplinary team that focuses on the potential impact of a project instead of its category or limitations. We are designers and strategists who come together to produce and realize good design across scales.
Emily Bauer Principal
Emily is the founder of Bau Land. She approaches design through a background in the sciences. Before starting Bau Land in 2019, she was a project leader at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) where she oversaw a number of prominent designs, including a climate adaptation plan for Lower Manhattan. Prior to that, she was an Associate at !melk Landscape Architecture, where she helped realize the first park on the Las Vegas Strip. Emily earned her Masters of Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and her undergraduate degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
Sharing knowledge is an important aspect of her work. Emily is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University, and regularly gives lectures on Bau Land’s research and projects. She was a Juror for the AN Best of Design Awards and her work has been featured in a number of exhibitions, including ‘Humanhattan 2050’ at the 2018 Venice Biennale.
